MINUTES OF NORTH COAST OHIO MEETING
March 2, 2009

The meeting at Dimitri’s Restaurant, Independence, Ohio was called to order at 6:30 PM by President Walt Stashkiw.  In attendance were Vice President, Jeremy Goldstein, Treasurer, John Vorhies, and the following Board Members and guests; Dave Williams, Tim Rash, Allan Jones, Ken Tatter, Mary and Don Emery, Joe Nemes, Greg Glick, Gil Maringer, Cliff Wolfe, Sylvia Chappell, Bill Hunter, Rose and Ray McFarland, and Les and Marilyn Demaline.

The minutes of the February meeting were approved as presented.  John Vorhies reported that the treasury balance had been reduced by the amount of expenses of $1790.00 incurred for the show at the IX Center in January.  He did point out that more than half the expenses were for new signs and carpeting, an investment that will be used again at future shows.  John gave an updated membership report indicating that 89 members had renewed for 2009.  17 members have not renewed as of this date.

Old Business:   A final Committee Report was presented by Les Demaline on the I-X Winter Boat Show.  Once again Les thanked all those who participated or helped with the organization, the set-up and/or worked during the show on behalf of  NCO.  An article was sent to The Rudder about the show spotlighting NCO. Awards were passed out to the members who displayed boats at the show and Les  will soon begin working on plans for the 2010 show.

Cliff Wolfe continued his discussion regarding the possibility of NCO hosting the ACBS Annual Meeting in 2012.  He asked members to help investigate locations as well as look for possible events that could be included in the Pre-Event Program.  Members agreed that we should put our efforts into reviewing available information at this time so that we could make a decision in the near future about whether our Chapter would have the manpower as well as the facilities to put on an event of this size.

New Business:  Gil Maringer passed out the flyer for the April 4, 2009 Spring Workshop.  The flyers will be mailed to all NCO members and to surrounding ACBS Chapters.  The program will feature special guest speakers Ken Warby, the “Fastest Man on Water” who will present the history of setting speed records on the water.  Also Jim Simmons, National Champion in recent years will describe Offshore Powerboat racing.  Joe Hodges, owner of Boatcraft, will demonstrate steam bending of seam battens and Dave Williams, who has authored articles for the Brass Bell, will share research results on the strength of original versus new mahogany.  And, of course, you will be able to view other restorations being completed in Joe’s shop.  Coffee and donuts will be provided by the Emery’s and lunch is included in the $10.00 admission fee.

The 2009 Boating Event Calendar was discussed and the dates of events were confirmed.

The Rendezvous is set for May 30 at the Turkeyfoot Island Club.  Jack Lynett is in charge of this event.  He will be notifying the Board of their food assignments for the picnic lunch.  The boating event for the day will be a photos of boat fly-bys taken byDon Emery provided that arrangements can be made with the State.  Details will be announced as they become available.

ACBS Summer Quarterly Meeting is scheduled for on June 19-21 at Easton, MD, the site of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter Boat Show.

Portage Lakes Show will be June 27.  Walt Stashkiw will chair this show.  He is open for committee volunteers.

Other area shows supported by NCO members include:
            Buckeye Lake                                                              June
Chautauqua Lake at Bemus Point, NY              July 11-12
            Indian Lake                                                                  July
Lakeside Show in Marblehead, OH                              July 19

Jeremy passed out a new banner design.  A motion made by Joe Nemes, seconded by Cliff Wolfe and passed by the members agreed to have Jeremy have two new banners made to use for this year’s events.

Cliff is pursuing the project of offering a new selection of shirts that could be purchased by the Chapter members.  Prior to selecting the shirt choices Cliff suggested we have the current logo looked at to see if it could be “cleaned up” or improved.  A motion was made by Don Emery and seconded by Bill Hunter that Cliff have Tom Ott, a local artist look at the logo.  We hope to have this completed in time for the next meeting along with actual samples of the shirts.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 6 at 6:oo PM at Dimitri’s.

The meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Marilyn Demaline
