MINUTES OF NORTH COAST OHIO MEETING
Monday, Mar. 3, 2008
The regular meeting of the NCO Board was held on March 3, 2008 at Dimitri’s Restaurant in Independence, Ohio. President Walt Stashkiw called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM. Attending the meeting were Walt and Kathy Stashkiw, Vice President, Jeremy Goldstein, Treasurer John Vorhies and members and/or Directors Kim Vorhies, Bill and Lucy Hunter, Joe Nemes, Les and Marilyn Demaline, Greg and Nancy Glick, Dave Williams, Don and Mary Emery, and Ray McFarland.
The minutes for February 6, 2008 meeting were approved as written. John Vorhies reported that the current treasury balance remains above the balance of one year ago. The current paid membership totals 97, which is about 20 members less than 2007. A copy of a letter from ACBS Director, Cheryll Shampier, Chairman of the Membership Development Committee was passed out to NCO members. This committee is working to develop and share with chapters ideas and plans to help recruit and retain members. They will also offered to help us contact those NCO members who have not yet renewed.
A letter received from the Great Lakes Museum thanking NCO for our monetary donation was recognized by John Vorhies.
Some time was spent discussing the NCO web site. It appears that NCO members are not always forwarding updated information to Dan White for timely posting on the web site. Marilyn Demaline suggested that the responsibility for forwarding the meeting minutes to Dan should be the responsibility of the Secretary (or whoever records the minutes in the absence of the Secretary). Boat shows and Chapter events should be reported to Dan by the Event Chairman to assure that all details posted are correct and accurate. Adding this to the responsibility of the Chairman will be to their advantage. The President agreed that we should try this procedure. Bill Hunter also brought up that some members continue to have difficulties navigating the web site. Marilyn will request that Dan attend our next Board Meeting. He could demo the navigation techniques, answer questions, and together we can work to make these efforts provide positive results for all members.
Walt reported that as of this date Gil Maringer has 31 reservations for the spring workshop scheduled for March 15 at BoatCraft.
It was also confirmed by Walt that the Buckeye Lake Show is scheduled for June 21 as reported at an earlier meeting.
Bill Hunter announced that the Lyman Club has scheduled their annual Lyman Regatta at Put-in-Bay on July 11-13, 2008. The All Classics Wooden Boat Show will be held this year in Huron on August 15-17.
Jack Lynett, Chairman of the Annual NCO Rendezvous will report on the details of the 5/31/08 event at the next meeting.
The Portage Lakes Boat Show Chairman, Walt Stashkiw passed out Committee Task Lists for the June 28, 2008 event. Walt showed the new and unique award created by Joe Nemes that will be presented to Boat Show participants and category winners at this year’s show. A request will be submitted to the Portage Lakes Historical Society to co-sponsor the annual show as they have done in the past.
Les Demaline presented details for a tour event for NCO members on May 10, 2008. The tour will begin at Air Ship RIBs in Vermilion. The company builds rigid hull inflatable boats. Following the boat shop tour, we will proceed to Willoway Nurseries new, modern 5-acre greenhouse facility near Huron. The tour will end up at Berardi’s Restaurant in Huron for lunch. A motion was made and seconded by Don Emery and John Vorhies to go ahead with this tour. All members present voted in the affirmative. Les will prepare a flyer with all pertinent times and directions and have them mailed to NCO membership.
Old business once again visited the topic of the I-X Boat Show. Most members present agreed that we should to the show one more year, but that it would be necessary to do more advance planning in order to have a better display of our wooden boats. Les Demaline agreed to chair a committee to work out details and make the contacts to the NCO membership to assure that we have a great display of boats at the show in 2009.
Updated information was received regarding member Denny Naylon who has been seriously ill for several weeks. The good news is that Denny has been moved to a skilled nursing facility to help with the next steps of his recovery.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2008 at 6:00 PM.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn Demaline
