MINUTES OF NORTH COAST OHIO MEETING
AND SPRING WORKSHOP
Saturday, April 9, 2005
On Saturday, April 9, members of the North Coast Ohio Chapter
of ACBS met at John Riddle's Boat Works in Vermilion, Ohio
for a boat workshop. The topics that were demonstrated and
discussed included:
1. How to determine the location of a waterline on any wooden
boat.
2. Varnishing techniques and the various types of varnish
that are available.
3. Drawing a vacuum for certain epoxy applications.
4. Deck seams and seam compounds - white versus mahogany.
5. Tom Pryor demonstrated a device for fastening hull boards
to the stem.
The club presented John Riddle with a gift of a cordless drill
and trouble light as a token of their appreciation. Those
attending the workshop were given a ticket to participate
in a door prize drawing for a like drill/trouble light set.
Bethanne Pepke from Michigan had the winning ticket. A total
of 36 attended.
Following the workshop, President Jack Lynett called to order
a short business meeting. The minutes of the March 7 meeting
were approved and Treasurer John Vorhies reported a treasury
balance of $9434.00. Our current membership is 118. John will
prepare a list of those persons who did not renew membership
for the Officer and Directors to review.
To wrap up the IX Show, Les presented trophies to those members
who displayed boats at the winter show. Bill Hunter showed
us a poster used for the 2005 Mt. Dora Show that featured
the Chris Craft Cobra. Bill framed the poster to give to Clem
Fennell from Kentucky who allowed us to display his cobra
at the I-X Show.
Jack announced that the North Coast Ohio Chapter will celebrate
their 10th anniversary in May. He requested that members think
about some way we could celebrate the occasion. Ideas will
be presented at the May meeting.
2005 events were reviewed once again. It appears that all
shows are a "go" and preparations are under way.
The annual NCO Rendezvous is set for June 4 at the Turkey
Foot Island Club.
Les announced that he had worked out the problems with Vermilion
show for this year. Consideration will be given to re-locate
future shows if necessary. Some suggestions for relocation
included the Lyman Harbor in Sandusky.
Walt Stashkiw announced that the Portage Lakes Show is Saturday
July 2 at the Harbor Inn.
Once again, the Lake Chautauqua show is scheduled at Holiday
Harbor on July 16. Gil Maringer noted that the new owners
have been very cooperative in helping to sponsor this show.
Bill Hunter proposed to do a project for the club using 4-5
leading varnishes. He will apply each varnish to a plank and
set them out in the weather. The finishes will be evaluated
over a period of time for durability, gloss retention, etc.
A motion was made and passed to budget $200.00 to cover the
purchase of varnishes, brushes and planks. As an aside, in
jest, Ray McFarland suggested that Bill prepare an extra plank
that we could display at our boat shows with a sign inviting
everybody to PLEASE TOUCH!
Announcements:
NCO members recently received notices of a new show at Lake
Wawasee in Indiana on June 10-12. The ACBS Directors' summer
meeting originally scheduled for Lake Okanagan, BC has been
changed to Toronto on July 9. Dan White announced that the
Web Page is up.
The meeting adjourned at 12:15 PM. Those attending went to
the Mooshead Grill for lunch. Next meeting of the NCO Board
will be at Dimitri's Restaurant on Monday, May 2, 2005 at
6:30 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Marilyn Demaline, Secretary
