MINUTES OF NORTH COAST OHIO MEETING
Monday, September 18, 2006

The meeting was held at the Olde Harbor Inn, Portage Lakes, and called to order by President Greg Glick at 7:00 pm.  In attendance were Vice President Walt Stashkiw, Treasurer John Vorhies, Kim Vorhies, Bill Hunter, Nancy Glick, Julie and Eric West, Don and Mary Emery, Tom and Brenda Patterson, Larry Prebis, Jeremy Goldstein, Joe Hodges, John and Nancy Herwick, Cliff Wolfe, Gil and Cheryl Maringer, and Bud and Ginger Long.  Secretary, Jack Lynett was absent due to his attending the ACBS international meeting; Gil Maringer was asked to record the minutes.

The first order of business was to welcome new member Joe Hodges who reported that he has opened a new wood and fiberglass boat restoration business in the Portage Lakes area.  The business name is BoatCraft.  Greg welcomed Joe and wished him well.

Next Greg asked for volunteers to be on the nominating committee for 2007 officers and directors.  Gil, Bud, and John Vorhies volunteered to recruit candidates for the ballot, which must be sent out one month before the Dec 9th annual meeting.

Walt gave a report on the July 1st Portage Lakes show in which 42 boats were registered and many considered the show to be the best ever.  Walt thanked all who helped and accepted a $300.00 donation from the Portage Lakes Historical Society presented by Tom and Brenda Patterson.  Brenda also commented that as a Coventry Township Trustee, the community very much appreciates having such a classy family event on the lakes.  Walt also reported that the income and expenses overall showed a slight profit with the major expense being the banquet where close to 100 people attended at the Turkeyfoot Island Club.  He thanked Jack, Bill, Bud, and Gil for their work in providing the beautiful participation awards and trophies.  Walt volunteered to chair next year’s event, which will be Saturday, June 30, 2007.

Greg reported that the Chautauqua show although hampered by rainy weather was a very successful event.  It was organized for the first time by local NCO member Andy Robinson and Bill Reynolds.  The show had 44 boats registered and generated $500. profit for NCO.  Cliff mentioned that at the Buffalo show he learned of a petition to ACBS for the formation of a new chapter centered in the Chautauqua area.  Greg said we would support the effort and was proud of the role NCO has played over the years in developing interest in classic boating for that area.

John Vorhies reviewed the Conneaut show and many commented on what a nice venue it was.  John mentioned that he had a video of the event available to members and that he expected there would be a request for us to attend again in 2007.
Next, Greg discussed the calendar for 2007.  First the IX Center in January.  Greg will contact Jim Bassett to see if he will again chair the event.  It will be the show’s 50th anniversary so they would like to emphasize boats from 1957.
A spring workshop will be planned perhaps at Jeremy Goldstein’s or Joe Hodges’ shops.  Greg will ask Jack to again chair the Portage Lakes Rendezvous.  Along with the Portage Lakes show on 6/30/07 it is expected we will attend the Conneaut event.  Greg will also contact Mike Lloyd, President of the Lyman Owners Assoc., regarding the Huron Wood Boat Festival.

John Vorhies reported that the treasury has remained very close to the same balance as a year ago after all boat show and major expenses have been reported.  The membership is currently at 117, which is slightly lower than last year at this time.  John also offered copies of a report on ethanol fuels and their effects on our antique engines.

The annual meeting will be held this year at the Turkeyfoot Island Club, Sat. 12/9.  Eric West volunteered to arrange the menu and may consider a buffet.  Don Emery agreed to do the communication of the annual meeting.  It will be a byob event with activities beginning at 6:00 pm and dinner at 7:30.  We will also have the silent auction with all attendees asked to bring an item valued around $25.00.  Bill reminded us that candidates are also needed for the John Smith and Golden Hose Clamp awards.

Don Emery raised the issue of designating an NCO member to be an official delegate at ACBS quarterly meetings with some of the travel expense being provided from the treasury.   Other organizations find it helpful to have the same person representing their needs at international meetings.  After considering the benefits and expense it was decided that NCO has a unique advantage and connection to headquarters through Les and Jack’s roles in the international organization.  If in the future specific issues arise that NCO wishes to influence ACBS then the need for a delegate may be reconsidered.

Greg reported that the next Beacon newsletter is in draft form.  He encouraged anyone to send him articles and mentioned how Jack has been writing most of the articles.  Pixie Bond has offered to write about the Buffalo show, which she attended.

Cliff reported that the Buffalo show with over 200 boats entered should be one more NCO members should consider for next year.  He was congratulated for winning in his category with his newly launched Sea Skiff.

Walt discussed contacts he had made at the prestigious Glenmore Country Club antique auto show.  It appears there may be some interest in having antique boats on display and Walt will keep us advised.

The next NCO board meeting will be at Dimitri’s Restaurant, Independence Ohio, Monday October 23rd.  There will be no November meeting.  The mailing for the election of officers will occur before November 9th.  There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:45 pm.

Respectfully submitted

Gil Maringer
