MINUTES OF NORTH COAST OHIO MEETING
Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007
Minutes of the regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the North Coast Ohio Chapter of The Antique and Classic Boat Society, held on October 9th 2007 at Dimitri’s Restaurant, Parma Ohio.
The meeting was called to order by President Greg Glick at 6:40 PM. Present were, Greg Glick, VP Walt Stashkiw, Treasurer John Vorhies, Secretary Jack Lynett, Past President Gil Maringer and Directors Les Demaline, Ray McFarland, Jim Bassett, Eric West, Bud Long, Bill Hunter and Don Emery. Guests included Marilyn Demaline, Rose McFarland, Mary Emery and Dan White.
Minutes of the May 2007 were approved as published.
President Glick discussed the coming election of officers, and appointed Les Demaline, Don Emery, Ray McFarland Bud Long and Bill Hunter to the Nominating Committee. Les announced the committee would meet immediately after the Board meeting. The committee will provide a slate of nominees at the next meeting in November and the ballots will be mailed with notices of the annual meeting in December.
Greg asked the Board to provide nominees for the John Smith Award and the famous Golden Hose Clamp award. As last year’s Hose Clamp recipient, Bud Long will be responsible for passing the award to the new winner at the annual meeting.
Jack Lynett brought the Board up to date on happenings at the International level. Jack, Bill and Lucy Hunter, Les and Marilyn Demaline, and Don and Mary Emery attended the annual ACBS meeting in Lake George NY. In addition, Gil and Cheryl Maringer, Bud and Ginger Long, Denny Naylon and Kathy, Tom and Sherrill Pryor attended the pre-event activities. North Coast members John and Janet Howard brought the NCO total to 17 in attendance. Jack explained the events leading up to the dues increase, and the fact that the Executive Committee did not bring it to the floor because of time constraints, but a motion from the floor brought the matter up, and it overwhelmingly passed.
In addition to the various meetings and committee reports, Jack explained the awards given at the closing banquet. North Coast Ohio was honored to receive the “Best Web Site” award which Jack accepted that evening. Since the success of the NCO web site was thru the efforts of Dan White, Jack presented the beautiful acrylic plaque to Dan, which bears his name as Web Master.
John Vorhies reported on the treasury status and the fact that membership is down by about 10 from earlier years to 114. Most of the decline is because of new chapters in New York and western Ohio being just formed.
The future of the newsletter was discussed, and Jack volunteered to serve as editor.
Greg informed the Board of the new position of ACBS International on “charitable” tax status for the chapters. We can now ask to be covered under the charitable status of ACBS, but it involves annual reporting of activities and income. The advantage is that anyone donating time or money to the chapter can receive a receipt for tax purposes. The dis-advantage is in the required reporting and the cost to NCO to ACBS to file the IRS returns. On motion it was MOVED, SECONDED and PASSED that NCO not participate in the program at this time.
Don Emery reported on the status of the annual dinner at Edgewater Yacht Club. He and Marilyn Demaline will work on the menu and will consult with Eric West on the prices and items. It was MOVED, SECONDED and PASSED that NCO invite Gene Porter, new ACBS President to the annual meeting, and that NCO offer to pay the lodging and meals during his stay.
The coming boat shows were discussed. The Mid-America Boat show is scheduled for January llth thru the 20th and Jim Bassett will be contacting members to bring more wooden boats than in other years. There is no specific theme this year, so all boats are welcome. Jim will also work with the Antique Outboard Club to fill the space. The Rendezvous is again planned for May 31st at Turkeyfoot Island Club, with the Portage Lakes show scheduled for June 28th. Walt explained that both restaurants prefer that the boat show not be on the holiday weekend, but rather they prefer the week before or the week after the holiday. John Vorhies reported that the Conneaut event is set for July 26. Buckeye Chapter has moved its show to June 15 and the new chapter at Indian Lake has its show on July 19th 2007.
A discussion followed on the “direction” the chapter was taking. Jack suggested that a project should be found to bring together the members. NCO has built a kiosk for the Inland Seas Museum, a canoe for fund raising purposes, and the chapter rebuilt the Portage Lakes launch ramp docks in the recent past. Greg suggested that each board member bring an idea to the next meeting for discussion.
The next regular meeting was set for November 6, with social hour at 6 and meeting at 6:30 at Dimitri’s restaurant.
On MOTION the meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM.
Respectfully submitted
Jack Lynett
Secretary
